

As a Darwin Leader, in January 2024, Karinne investigated threats to shorebirds in the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve in collaboration with the Cape Horn International Center in Puerto Williams, Chile. She directed three short films on the project.

Karinne appeared live on Episode 29 of Darwin200’s “World’s Most Exciting Classroom” to talk about her Darwin Leader placement in Puerto Williams, Chile. She discussed her investigation of threats to shorebirds in the Cape Horn Biosphere Reserve and shared the first of three documentaries on the project.

In June 2021, Karinne presented at the Inaugural Freeman Environmental Education Youth Council’s “Green Michigan Symposium.”
As founder and president of her high school birding club (the Ornithological Society of Pioneer), Karinne discussed the importance of bird conservation and the crucial role of young birders in the global initiative.

Karinne independently created and produced “Taking Flight,” an ornithology podcast dedicated to increasing interest in birding and spreading awareness about issues in the birding world, particularly among young people.
With original music, content, and cover art, there are 12 released episodes with over 800 listens from 27 US states and 25 countries.

Karinne was featured in her high school’s newspaper’s student profile column. In this interview with the editor of “The Pioneer Optimist,” which was rated a “First Place Newspaper Publication in 2020” by the American Scholastic Association.”
